## 💨 70% of Food Emissions from Land Use and Agriculture

The rise in overall food emissions globally can be attributed to the increase in population and the corresponding increase in food consumption. Agricultural production emissions and land use change account for nearly 70% of the 18 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, on a global scale, [1/3rd of all consumed food is wasted](https://www.fao.org/srilanka/news/detail-events/en/c/1441564/?ref=newsletters.qs.com), approximately[ 1.3 billion tons](https://www.theworldcounts.com/challenges/people-and-poverty/hunger-and-obesity/food-waste-statistics?ref=newsletters.qs.com#:~:text=Roughly%20a%20third%20of%20the,world%20is%20lost%20or%20wasted.) annually, highlighting the inefficiencies in the food supply chain, which come at a heavy environmental and social cost. There is a compelling call for sustainable practices, efficient resource management, and innovative solutions in agriculture and food distribution to mitigate environmental impacts.

## 🎓 37% of Households Show Consistency in Higher Education Amidst the Pandemic

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns, and social distancing, many institutions were forced to close down and transfer to online and hybrid sessions. The economic downturn and income instability led to a decrease in freshmen [post-secondary enrollment by 13.1%](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/23328584211045400?icid=int.sj-full-text.similar-articles.3&ref=newsletters.qs.com) in fall 2020\. However, in 2021, 20 million of the households studying for post-secondary education, accounting for nearly 37%, reported being consistent with their education plans despite the impacts of COVID-19\. Nearly 14 million students also reported that classes were in different formats due to the switch to online and hybrid learning.

## 🧑‍⚕️ Noncommunicable Diseases-Caused Deaths Afflict 75% of Women

Globally, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for [75% of women's and 72% of men's deaths](https://ncdportal.org/?ref=newsletters.qs.com), with women experiencing a higher NCD-related mortality rate. In high-income countries, particularly in the European and Western Pacific regions, NCDs significantly impact overall mortality rates. This can be attributed to lifestyle factors like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diets, which are prevalent in high-income societies. Conversely, low-income regions face higher communicable disease mortality due to limited healthcare access and immunization efforts.
