🎓 Non-Tax Support Tops Funding for Higher Education
Funding for state and local higher education had its highest increase in 2023, with over 10B USD. Despite a decrease in funding, non- tax support has continued to increase by over 2.5B, becoming the largest single revenue source for many institutions. The decline seen in 2024 is largely due to declining enrolment, high tuition costs, and doubts concerning the value of a degree. Future challenges for state and local education funding in the USA will involve government policy navigating fiscal constraints and evolving student needs.
⚕️ >30% of Physicians Practiced Part Time in the US
Physicians practicing part time in the US have increased to over 30% by 2022, whereas those employed directly by hospitals have remained under 10%. This increase is due to physicians moving away from private practices and shifting towards employment within larger health care systems. Physicians state that this is due to the access of costly resources and the necessity of managing payers' administrative and regulatory obligations more effectively. The state of California’s ban on physician employment by hospitals is based on the conflict of moral obligation and professional standards.
🏭 Amazon, Google, and Microsoft Lead Advanced Manufacturing Hiring
Amazon employed nearly 1%, amounting to over 90,000, of advanced manufacturing workers in the USA, followed by Google and Microsoft. This is due to the expansion of mega data centers. Despite Apple having one of the highest tech company revenues of 2023, the employment of advanced manufacturing workers is 0.4% lower than that of Amazon, due to their sole focus on internal production. The increase in advanced manufacturing workers will be seen as companies are investing large amounts into data centers, cloud infrastructure, and artificial intelligence.
