**Happy Monday 👋**

Global clean energy efforts are gaining momentum, highlighted by significant investments in innovative projects. China is spearheading a [$1.5B](https://www.eldiario24.com/en/energy-china-hydrogen-wind-solar/2290/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) green hydrogen production facility, while Amazon has committed [$500M](https://www.esgtoday.com/amazon-leads-500-million-capital-raise-for-small-modular-nuclear-technology-company-x-energy/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) to nuclear startup X-energy, aiming to develop small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) for low-carbon electricity. However, challenges remain, including recent [nationwide blackouts in Cuba](https://energycentral.com/news/electricity-returns-most-havana-rest-cuba-still-plagued-blackouts?ref=newsletters.qs.com), and a substantial [decline in China’s steel demand](https://www.mining.com/web/chinas-steel-demand-has-shrunk-to-less-than-half-global-total/?ref=newsletters.qs.com), which impacts industrial energy consumption. Additionally, the ongoing struggle to [phase down fossil fuels](https://www.eenews.net/articles/countries-agreed-to-phase-down-fossil-fuels-theyre-struggling-to-do-it/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) continues to hinder progress toward a sustainable energy future amid these ambitious clean energy initiatives.

## 🌅 New Energy

**🌍 China's $1.5B Green Hydrogen Mega-Project.** China is making a significant move into the hydrogen energy sector with a [$1.5 billion integrated facility ](https://www.eldiario24.com/en/energy-china-hydrogen-wind-solar/2290/?ref=newsletters.qs.com)in Xinjiang, which will produce 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually using both solar and wind power. This project, led by Grove Hydrogen Energy Technology Group, aims to fuel 600 hydrogen-powered trucks and support the local electricity grid with a 1,600-MWh peaker plant.

**⚠️ Wind Power Crisis Threatens Global Renewable Energy Target.** The [wind power industry is facing bottlenecks](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-23/wind-power-crisis-is-threat-to-world-s-renewable-energy-target?ref=newsletters.qs.com) that are jeopardizing the chance to meet the global target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 despite accelerating solar deployment.

**⚡ Germany Approves $20B Hydrogen Network Plans.** Germany approved plans for the construction of a [$20B hydrogen pipeline network](https://hydrogen-central.com/germany-approves-plans-for-e19-billion-hydrogen-network/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) spanning over 9,000km, including a connection to the Danish border by 2028.

## 🔌 Utilities

**🔋 Australia's Battery Boom Surpasses Solar and Wind Projects.** The [volume of large-scale battery energy storage projects](https://www.pv-magazine-australia.com/2024/10/19/australias-big-battery-bonanza/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) under construction in Australia exceeded that of solar and wind projects combined in 2023, and this trend has intensified in the current year, with batteries receiving federal support as coal-fired power plants are decommissioned.

**⚡ Electricity Crisis in Cuba: Havana Regains Power, but Blackouts Persist Nationwide.** Cuba's electrical system collapsed, causing [nationwide blackouts for three days](https://energycentral.com/news/electricity-returns-most-havana-rest-cuba-still-plagued-blackouts?ref=newsletters.qs.com). While power was restored in most parts of Havana, the rest of the country remained without electricity as authorities focused on reconnecting individual regions.

**⚡️ US DOE to invest $2B to enhance grid resilience and capacity.** The US Department of Energy announced [$2B in funding](https://www.power-technology.com/news/us-doe-additional-2bn/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) for 38 projects to protect the power grid from extreme weather and increase transmission capacity.

## ⛽ Oil & Gas

**⚠️ IEA Head Warns of Weakening Global Oil Demand.** The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has expressed serious concerns over [weakening global oil demand](https://www.offshore-technology.com/news/iea-head-expresses-serious-concern-over-weakening-global-oil-demand/?ref=newsletters.qs.com), citing China's weakening oil demand and an increase in electric vehicle sales as factors that will negatively impact oil demand growth.

**⚠️ Countries Struggle to Phase Down Fossil Fuels Despite Global Pact.** A year after signing the COP28 agreement, which aimed to phase down fossil fuels, many countries are [struggling to meet their commitments](https://www.eenews.net/articles/countries-agreed-to-phase-down-fossil-fuels-theyre-struggling-to-do-it/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) and are instead expanding oil and gas production.

**🔌 Iraq Signs Gas Deal with Turkmenistan.** Iraq signed a deal with Turkmenistan to import up to [20 million cubic meters per day of natural gas](https://www.enerdata.net/publications/daily-energy-news/iraq-signs-deal-turkmenistan-import-20-mcmd-gas-power-plants.html?ref=newsletters.qs.com), primarily for its gas-fired power plants. The agreement specifies seasonal energy distribution, aiming to diversify Iraq's gas sources to meet energy demands.

## 💎 Mining and Metals

**📉 China's Steel Demand Shrinks to Less Than Half Global Total.** China's [steel demand shrunk](https://www.mining.com/web/chinas-steel-demand-has-shrunk-to-less-than-half-global-total/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) to less than half of the global total, due to the decline in the country's real estate sector, according to the World Steel Association.

**⛏️ NSW Launches $160M Strategy to Support Critical Minerals Boom.** The New South Wales (NSW) government in Australia announced a comprehensive critical minerals strategy, aiming to[ position the state as a global leader in the sector](https://www.mining-technology.com/news/nsw-support-critical-minerals/?ref=newsletters.qs.com).

**🏭 India's Green Steel Revolution and Renewable Energy Integration.** India, the world's second-largest steel producer, faces the [challenge of decarbonizing its steel industry](https://senecaesg.com/insights/indias-strategy-for-green-steel-revolution-and-renewable-energy-integration/?ref=newsletters.qs.com), which relies heavily on carbon-intensive methods.
