The number of international students entering Malaysia has seen a significant surge, climbing from 81,953 in 2019 to 128,907 in 2024\. This consistent upward trend indicates Malaysia's increasing appeal as a global higher education destination. This rise aligns with the national goal of becoming a regional education hub, as evidenced by the[ strong application numbers from Chinese students.](https://studytravel.network/magazine/news/0/31256?ref=newsletters.qs.com#:~:text=Malaysia%20experienced%20a%2025%20per,per%20cent%20on%202023%20levels.) The growth is supported by the[ Malaysian Higher Education Development Plan 2025-2035](https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/2025/02/27/mohe-draft-of-higher-education-plan-2025-2035-complete/168137?ref=newsletters.qs.com), implemented by the Ministry of Higher Education, which aims to attract[ 250,000 international students by 2025](https://gslglobal.com/2025/02/14/malaysia-on-track-to-attract-250000-foreign-students-by-2025/?ref=newsletters.qs.com).

Geothermal power generation increased steadily from 15.78 TWh in 2013 to 16.46 TWh in 2023\. This growth is being driven by new [Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)](https://globalenergymonitor.org/report/trump-administrations-policies-support-rapid-growth-of-geothermal-power-in-the-united-states-with-1-2-gw-planned-by-end-of-term/?ref=newsletters.qs.com#:~:text=Geothermal%20is%20an%20industry%20known,Enhanced%20Geothermal%20Shot2%20initiative.) technology, which utilizes the transferable skills of the oil and gas workforce for drilling and subsurface expertise. However,[ geothermal power](https://triplepundit.com/2025/geothermal-energy-businesses/?ref=newsletters.qs.com#:~:text=In%20contrast%2C%20geothermal%20energy%20only,by%20midcentury%2C%20the%20agency%20estimates.) lags substantially behind wind and solar in the US renewable energy mix. The US Department of Energy (DOE) implementing the [Enhanced Geothermal Shot to reduce EGS costs by 90% by 2035](https://www.energy.gov/articles/doe-launches-new-energy-earthshot-slash-cost-geothermal-power?ref=newsletters.qs.com) is a policy to uplift this trend.

Google’s annual water withdrawals rose from 2,500M gallons in 2016 to 8,653M gallons in 2023, more than tripling in seven years. This reflects the[ surge in data center and AI infrastructure demand](https://www.reuters.com/business/us-data-center-build-hits-record-ai-demand-surges-bank-america-institute-says-2025-09-10/?ref=newsletters.qs.com), with 2023 marking the sharpest yearly increase. Public concerns over the environment and social impact of the increasing scale of data centers have been mounting. The[ US Environmental Protection Agency](https://www.epa.gov/data-centers?ref=newsletters.qs.com) is developing stricter data center water-use reporting to improve transparency and conservation.
