✈️ International Student Enrolments in the UK on the Rise

International student flow to the UK increased by nearly 10% between 2019 and 2023, reflecting a strong post-pandemic recovery. However, growth is now slowing due to government restrictions preventing most international students from bringing dependents, which has sharply reduced enrolments from countries like India and Nigeria. HESA data shows a 6.7% drop in new HE enrolments in 2023/24. Rising tuition, visa, and healthcare costs, along with Brexit’s impact on EU students, further strain demand, challenging the UK’s position as a global education hub.

🍃 China Led in Clean Manufacturing Technologies

China controls 64% of global wind turbine manufacturing, dwarfing the European Union's 16% and the United States' 8% shares. Chinese manufacturers Goldwind, Envision, Windey, and Mingyang claimed the top four positions in 2024, displacing Western firms. A Chinese, wind firm, Mingyang, announced plans for a $2B Scottish factory, exemplifying Chinese expansion into European markets alongside existing projects in Italy and Croatia. The EU launched its Wind  Power Package in 2023 to strengthen domestic manufacturing.

🤖 South Korea Relies on More Robot Installations for Industrial Efficiency

South Korea led global robot density with 1,012 units per 10,000 employees, more than double Singapore's 770 and significantly ahead of China's 470. This trend accelerates as strengthened worker protections, like the yellow envelope law, push companies toward automation to manage rising labor compliance costs. The government is fueling this shift, addressing demographic challenges via the Fourth Intelligent Robot Basic Plan, a $2.26B investment through 2030, reinforcing the move toward robot-centric industrial growth.
