🎓 International PhD Students in Germany More Than Doubled

From 2002 to 2023, the number of international PhD students in Germany more than doubled, reaching nearly 30,800 in 2023. Germany’s appeal stems from strong research specialisations in engineering, natural sciences, and AI, alongside unique employment opportunities in universities, Max Planck and Fraunhofer institutes, and industry‑linked labs. Scholarships like DAAD Research Grants and low or no tuition fees further attract global talent, making Germany a leading destination for advanced research careers.

🍃 Liquefied Gas Tankers Accounted for the Highest CH4 Emissions

From 2016 to 2023, liquefied gas tankers emitted nearly 180,000 tonnes of CH₄, the highest among ship classes (IEA). Methane release occurs during loading, unloading, and boil-off gas venting from LNG cargo, and its high global warming potential intensifies ocean warming, acidification, and marine ecosystem disruption. Regulators like the IMO and EU are pushing for methane slip limits, improved containment, and cleaner fuel alternatives, but implementation faces technical and cost challenges, making methane emissions a persistent environmental risk.

🤖 More Companies Integrate AI Into Core Business Functions

From 2022 to 2024, over 30% more companies reported using AI in at least one business function, with adoption reaching nearly 85% of respondents by 2024. While many industries thrive on AI optimisation, traditional industries, including investment banking and corporate finance, are undergoing significant restructuring as advanced models like GPT-4, Claude, and BloombergGPT handle tasks such as financial analysis, risk modelling, M&A due diligence, and portfolio optimisation, replacing high-level roles and streamlining decision-making across complex workflows.
