Australia and New Zealand recorded the lowest youth NEET rate in 2024 due to strong school to work pathways and [active labour market programmes](https://www.ilo.org/publications/active-labour-market-programs-improve-employment-and-earnings-young-people?ref=newsletters.qs.com) that support young people. These countries also benefit from stable labour markets and close links between employers and education providers. Despite this, NEET remains widespread globally as [rising competition for jobs](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/09/gen-z-are-competitive-job-market-randstad/?ref=newsletters.qs.com#:~:text=The%20data%20is%20in:%20Gen%20Z%20face,jobs%20faster%2C%20but%20are%20filled%20with%20ambition.) and limited access to quality education continue to hinder young people from stable employment and training opportunities.

This plateau persists despite worsening global health workforce shortages and rising disease burdens.
