## 🍚 Nutrition and Supplement Regulatory Landscape

Historically, a lack of uniform enforcement has created regulatory grey areas within the nutrition and supplement space. To prioritize public health, regulators are tightening controls, posing challenges for existing players and raising barriers to entry. Major regulatory bodies worldwide are taking action. The FDA, for instance, is mandating lead testing for food manufacturers using international ingredients. Additionally, they are [restructuring](https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2024/05/31/FDA-reorganization-gets-green-light?ref=newsletters.qs.com) their food division to streamline responses to food-related incidents. Similar trends are emerging elsewhere, with Uruguay [considering](https://www.nutraingredients-latam.com/Article/2024/05/07/Uruguay-considers-proposal-to-regulate-dietary-supplements?ref=newsletters.qs.com) stricter regulations on dietary supplements. Heightened regulatory scrutiny is prompting even large distributors to act. In May, Amazon [implemented](https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2024/05/09/Amazon-s-third-party-testing-supports-industry-standards?ref=newsletters.qs.com) new standards for third-party food vendors on their platform.

Tobacco use is a major preventable cause of premature death globally, resulting in over 7M deaths in 2019\. Nearly 60% of these deaths occur in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. Tobacco use is closely linked to ischemic heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, causing over 1.5M deaths. It also contributes to asthma, stroke, and lung cancer. This leads to [disability and premature death](https://tobaccoatlas.org/challenges/health-effects/?ref=newsletters.qs.com#:~:text=Harms%20from%20tobacco%20begin%20before%20birth%2C%20as%20pregnant%20females%20who%20smoke%20give%20birth%20to%20infants%20at%20higher%20risk%20of%20congenital%20disorders%2C%20cancer%2C%20lung%20diseases%2C%20low%20birth%20weight%2C%20and%20sudden%20death.), accounting for [one in three deaths](https://tobaccoatlas.org/challenges/health-effects/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) from these major diseases caused by smoking. Smoking and smokeless tobacco use are costly, with [India alone facing costs exceeding 1% of its GDP](https://www.who.int/india/news/detail/09-02-2021-india-loses-1-of-its-gdp-to-diseases-and-early-deaths-from-tobacco-use-finds-who-study?ref=newsletters.qs.com). The [UK aims to be smoke-free by 2030](https://www.bbc.com/news/health-67703066?ref=newsletters.qs.com), but the rise in the proportion of people giving up smoking has been offset by an increase in smoking among 18- to 24-year-olds. Australia implemented measures to limit smoking and vaping, with the[ 2023–24 budget including $737M](https://www.health.gov.au/ministers/the-hon-mark-butler-mp/media/taking-action-on-smoking-and-vaping?ref=newsletters.qs.com) to fund measures to protect Australians. In the US, the Department of Health and Human Services introduced a new [framework to accelerate smoking cessation](https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2024/03/08/hhs-announces-new-smoking-cessation-framework-support-quitting.html?ref=newsletters.qs.com) and address related disparities.

The update includes digital point-of-service (POS) for payment collection and other infrastructure necessary to allow its network pharmacies to provide digital payment methods. Advancements in providing easier access to digital payment methods are a step toward adapting e-prescription systems.
