👶 Home-Based Preschool Services in New Zealand Fell by Nearly 50%
Home-based preschool services in New Zealand declined by nearly 50% due to changes in government funding and increased regulatory pressures. While the government invested over $1B into 20 hours of free early childhood education, making it more affordable for parents, this made it difficult for providers to cover their costs while also paying their educators fair wages. Although the policies aim to improve the education quality, the downside is a reduction in the diversity of early learning options, particularly for rural families and those working non-standard hours who rely heavily on home-based care. The government has decided to ease regulations in the ECE sector to address this issue.
🍃 US Nuclear Energy Share of Total Electricity Generation Down 2%
While the US remains the world’s largest producer of nuclear power, its share in total electricity generation declined by 2% between 2017 and 2024. This drop is driven by high capital costs, construction delays, competition from cheaper renewable sources, and public safety concerns. The sector also faces a shrinking and aging workforce, with 60% of workers aged 30–54, above the national average. As older reactors retire and new projects stall, job losses mount, affecting engineers, technicians, and skilled trades. Continued decline may further deter new entrants, impacting the future workforce.
🤖 South Korea Led in Granted AI Patents Per Capita
In 2023, South Korea led the world in AI patents per capita, followed by Luxembourg and China. While China dominates in total AI patent volume, its high per capita ranking underscores exceptional AI innovation despite its vast population. Luxembourg, showing strong per capita growth, also tops global net AI talent migration, aiming to boost its domestic capabilities. South Korea, renowned for tech manufacturing, is aggressively deploying AI to sustain its industrial edge and remain competitive on the global stage.
