## 🏫 Sub-Saharan Africa falls behind in primary completion rates

Sub-Saharan Africa recorded the lowest primary school completion rate in 2024\. Primary education is essential because it builds basic literacy, numeracy, and life skills that shape lifelong learning and employability. [Persistent challenges](https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/persistent-teacher-gap-sub-saharan-africa-jeopardizing-education-recovery?ref=newsletters.qs.com), such as shortages of trained teachers and learning materials, lead to lower primary school completion rates. Compared with other regions of Africa, a major contributing factor is the[ lack of access to water and food,](https://thewaterproject.org/community/2023/08/03/why-becoming-educated-is-hard-in-sub-saharan-africa-especially-for-girls/?ref=newsletters.qs.com) which increases dropout rates. Strengthening education funding and social protection programmes remains essential to closing this gap.

## **🍃** Oceania tops water-use efficiency

Water-use efficiency measures the amount of economic value generated per cubic meter of water used, showing[ how effectively a region converts water into goods and services](https://www.gea.com/en/stories/turning-wastewater-into-value/?ref=newsletters.qs.com). Oceania’s efficiency is high because its water intensive industries and water policies allow it to produce more economic value with relatively limited water resources. [Improving water-use efficiency](https://www.shayp.com/blog/what-is-water-efficiency-and-how-can-you-improve-it?ref=newsletters.qs.com) is critical for sustainability, particularly in regions facing water scarcity and growing demand for agriculture and industry.

## 🏭 Biomass consumption nears 30B metric tons

Global domestic material consumption is rising, with biomass accounting for nearly 30B tons. Domestic material consumption measures the total amount of natural resources a country or region extracts and uses to support its economy and population. High biomass consumption reflects [continued reliance on natural resources](https://www.fao.org/4/i0132e/i0132e02.pdf?ref=newsletters.qs.com) for agriculture and rural livelihoods. [Sustainable management of biomass](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2949720523000024?ref=newsletters.qs.com) is crucial for balancing economic needs with environmental protection, maintaining soil fertility, and supporting global climate change mitigation efforts.
