🛠️ Skills and Workforce #46
QS Skills newsletter explores global labor trends, reskilling initiatives, and workforce gaps across impact sectors. Dive into the latest insights on Green Skills, Advanced Manufacturing, AI and Digital, and Health Skills.

Hello 👋
Global labor markets are navigating workforce realignment and strategic upskilling amid technological adoption and sustainability priorities. In the US, foreign-born employment fell by 1.1M since January 2025, while Microsoft reduced over 15,000 roles. UN budget cuts of $500M will trigger at least 3,000 layoffs, reflecting operational pressures and funding constraints.
Significant progress unfolds in workforce development initiatives worldwide. Green energy and sustainable construction programs, including C2R2’s $11.3M Green Building Skills initiative, Bournemouth and Poole College’s $1.3M renewable energy center, and KeyBank Foundation’s $750K Green Jobs program, are preparing workers with practical, industry-aligned skills. Technical upskilling in semiconductors, AI, and advanced manufacturing is supported by PCC ($1.7M), NICC ($454K), Meralco-TransCo programs, and corporate investments like Microsoft’s $30B UK AI/cloud initiative and The Warehouse Group-TCS partnership. Complemented by CapitaLand & WSG’s S$7M program and healthcare workforce expansions in the US and Australia, these efforts illustrate a global pivot toward digitally capable, sustainable, and adaptable labor markets.
