What’s next for international student recruitment in the UK?
Explore the latest Global Student Flows forecasts and student insights shaping UK recruitment.
The UK remains one of the world’s most attractive study destinations — but student expectations, source markets and competitive pressures are changing.
Our new Student mobility and motivation: United Kingdom report brings together QS Global Student Flows forecasts and insights from the QS International Student Survey to reveal where demand is heading and what UK-bound students value most.
The outlook: continued growth, but greater competition
QS Global Student Flows forecasts UK international student enrolments to grow by around 3.5% annually to 2030 — the strongest projected rate among the traditional ‘Big Four’ study destinations.
But capturing that growth will require institutions to respond to changing source-market dynamics, affordability concerns and increasingly compelling alternatives around the world.

What are students looking for?
The research highlights several priorities shaping student decisions:
- 58% say high-quality teaching is an important factor when choosing a country.
- Employability and post-study opportunities are becoming increasingly influential.
- 59% perceive the UK as expensive, putting greater pressure on institutions to communicate value and return on investment.
- Half of prospective students are considering five or more universities, making differentiation increasingly important.

Recruitment journeys are changing too
Official university websites remain students’ most influential information source, while the importance of social media has risen by 8% since 2022.
At the same time, students increasingly expect faster responses to enquiries and applications — making speed, personalisation and joined-up communication critical to conversion.
