Each week, we track the most significant developments shaping education worldwide. For the last two weeks, government actors accounted for ~43% of all major developments, nearly double the share led by companies. Venture capital barely registered. Right now education is being shaped by levers such as policy, skills, technology adoption, and institutional strategy.
Themes for the week:
AI access & restriction. New York City paused student-facing generative AI for nearly 600,000 students from 2-K through grade 8. Los Angeles Unified restricted student AI access for all grades. South Korea went the other way, testing free, unlimited AI for all residents, built mainly on domestic models.
Degree length. Oklahoma's regents approved four bachelor's degrees requiring 90 to 103 credit hours. A federal accreditation proposal closes for comment on 21 September.
Mobility. Australia used new powers to close a graduate diploma to new overseas students across 452 VET providers. Canada recorded 22,405 new international student arrivals in the first half of 2026, against a 155,000 target.
Teacher capability. The UAE plans to train 22,000 teachers to use AI in teaching, assessment and lesson planning.
For vendors, universities and investors, tenders and regulatory reviews now say more about where the market is heading than funding announcements do. Expect the next signals from district AI reviews and accreditor guidance on shorter degrees.

🎓 Saudi MCIT and Google launched an initiative providing 1M university students with free access to Gemini for one year, expanding student access to AI tools and supporting AI-enabled learning across higher education.
🧠 Canada launched a National AI Literacy Initiative with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, providing free AI learning for students, educators, workers, and communities while supporting foundational AI skills and responsible use.

🏛️ South Korea is tightening international student policies by restricting underperforming universities from recruiting foreign students, aiming to strengthen oversight and improve the quality of international education.
🔬IIT Bombay and Imperial College London launched a strategic partnership spanning research, innovation, and education, creating opportunities for joint research, academic workshops, student entrepreneurship, placements, and exchanges between India and the UK.
🌐 The UK clarified working-hour rules for international students on student visas, allowing eligible degree-level students to work up to 20 hours per week during term time while applying stricter limits to below-degree and part-time students.

Capital moves through acquisitions and grants as venture rounds stay small
🧭 Lemnis, a US education public charity, acquired Wayfinder, a creator of PreK-12 curriculum, which will convert from a for-profit to a nonprofit division of Lemnis.
🏫 Taylor's Schools, an international schools group, acquired four St Andrews International School campuses from Cognita to expand its schools portfolio.
🏛️ Bay Path University completed its acquisition of Cambridge College after final US Department of Education approval, expanding its academic offerings across Massachusetts.
🇬🇧 Global University Systems (GUS), a private education group, agreed to take ownership of Lincoln Bishop University, marking the effective privatisation of the public institution, subject to regulatory approval.
🩺 Dawraty, a Kuwaiti bilingual learning platform for healthcare education, raised $2M to support regional expansion across healthcare education, professional certification and exam preparation.
📊 Premia, a Brazilian AI learning diagnostics company, acquired Aulapp, an education platform serving schools and companies, to expand into corporate education.
