Hello πŸ‘‹

For years, an online or AI tutor was novel enough to stand out. The tutoring and learning providers gaining traction today are the ones that are demonstrating learning outcomes, not just AI features. India's Edtech sector is relearning this the hard way. Byju's, valued at $22 billion at the height of the pandemic boom, has spent the past two years in insolvency proceedings, with a drop in value of ~77%. Survivor PhysicsWallah is betting on the opposite approach: rather than license a general AI wrapper, its co-founder says the company is building small language models in-house, trained on data from 3.5 million daily active students, and already shipping AI Guru, AI Grader and Ask AI on that basis.

Learning delivery platforms in post-secondary are catching on too. Instructure's new Project Athena pulls data directly from a student's Canvas coursework and assessments, rather than generating explanations blind to what's actually being studied, citing Fordham Institute evidence that instructionally-aligned tutoring drives measurable outcome gains, reinforcing that context is critical to producing outcomes.

Coursera's recent activity complicates that story a little. Just after a Q2 call built around "trusted, verifiable" skills outcomes, Coursera announced a $100 million investment in LearnVector, a pre-product company built to adapt and personalize skills progressions, founded and led by Andrew Ng, Coursera's own co-founder and chairman. This is a different kind of bet than the outcomes-first case the company's been making to investors, and is worth watching as LearnVector's roadmap develops.
